Road crossing trials field trip

20/11/2013

Picture
On  Friday (15 Nov) Mission Beach Cassowaries (MBC ) attended part of a Cassowary road crossing trials field trip to discuss potential solutions to reduce cassowary deaths at locations where regular road deaths have been documented.

Present were representatives of CCRC, JCU, WTMA, Terrain and MBC.
The locations visited were the, Tully Gorge Rd, Old Tully Rd/Smiths Gap, Cedar Creek, Bingil Bay, Wongaling Creek, Carmoo/Lindsay Rd, Lettuce Farm on El Arish Mission Beach Road and Tully Mission Beach Rd generally.

This is a great CCRC initiative using local knowledge, Terrain's habitat corridor mapping and the JCU "Mission Beach Road Research report" which was developed with a $75,000 offset for the approval of the Oasis resort/residential development at Mission Beach 7 years ago, with a further $25,000 from the State department of Transport and Main Roads. (DTMR).

From offset to action on the ground is a long process. We look forward to keeping you up to date with any actions from this meeting as they are progressed.

I'm an interested student that has visited the area and would like to keep informed of how efforts to reduce cassowary road deathsare progressing.
thanks

Tracy
