Hello from sunny Coquette Point,

Another week and still no monsoon. However, we have been having more than enough rain from all sorts of other systems. We can do without the monsoon and its cyclones.

My dear friends Santina Lizzio and Jacque Grima came over for a cuppa this week and we went down to the river looking for crocodiles: what else would a few old girls do on a sunny afternoon.  All our chattering disturbed Charlene but Jackie and Santina had fun comparing their shoe sizes with Charlene’s footprints. Charlene’s shadow was someway in the water off the beach.

Hello from Crocodile Country,

Living anywhere along the northern coast of Australia one must be mindful of crocodiles. It is a total false expectation to believe that any programme of culling or removal can make the waters safe.  It is the absolute stupidity of locals in wading out into streams on sunset that invites crocodile attack.

Hello from Coquette Point,

Many years ago, around 1976, I decided to complete an inventory of the mangrove species along the foreshore of Coquette Point. One day struggling through the mangroves with my little notebook I tripped over a piece of steel. When I examined it to my amazement I found it was the fluke of a large anchor.  Only the discovery of an anchor would persuade my husband Bill to enter the mangroves and he soon confirmed my theory.

Before the tide covered the anchor we dug most of it out and were excited to see that it was a complete anchor. The next day we put a chain on it and with the aid of a bulldozer we dragged it out of the mangroves and up onto the lawn.

Hello from Coquette Point,
The rainforest is holding its breath as we sit in the steamy doldrums.  Occasionally the leaves at the very top of the rainforest canopy rustle and then as if the effort was to much they still and return to droop in the heat. The monsoon has moved north and we wait its return and the rain it will bring.  The next surge in the Monsoon should come with the new moon.

Grace Uhr journalist and photographer Stewart Mc Lean of the Cairns Post visited Coquette Point this week to do a story on the Little Tern.

Hello from the windy and wet,  Wet Tropics,

A brood monsoon trough is held over the Wet Tropics by a low pressure system that moved from the Gulf of Carpentaria and crossed the coast over Cairns Friday night. The low is now over Willis Island and is moving away from the coast in an ESE direction. It is expected to form into a cyclone tomorrow and to continue to move out to sea.
