The Reef - A passionate history

28/9/2013

Launch date: 6 November 2013
We look forward to reading  acclaimed historian Iain McCalman's The Reef - A passionate History. The first book of its kind, The Reef, charts the shifting status of the Great Barrier Reef from labyrinth of terror to global treasure, in 12 extraordinary tales".

The Reef includes the passionate battle fought in the 60's by Judith Wright, Len Webb and John Büsst from 'Ninney Rise', (Büsst's home at Bingil Bay), that culminated in the World Heritage listing of the Reef.

"The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system. It can be
seen from outer space, has been selected as a World Heritage Site and is
labelled one of the seven natural wonders of the world, yet few know the social, cultural and environmental history behind it.

Today, the reef is known for its astonishing underwater beauty and diversity, however once it was notorious for shipwrecks in its treacherous waters".

"Nature protection in Australia: The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement  (TPPA) is a rip in the fabric all the way from global to local".  (Margaret Moorhouse ASH)

"The Abbott Coalition is flirting with a trade agreement that would allow companies, acting increasingly in secret, to sue Australia if they don’t like its regulations.

"Labor rejected it outright.  Even the  Howard
government issued America with a rare “no” over the  legislation, declaring it contrary to national interests".

Bingil Bay Garners Beach - Joov and Cyril
Picture
Cyril (left) Joov (right)
'Joov' and 'Cyril'(ina) have got together as a cassowary couple this season. It is a big story because 'Cyril' is a four year old female who, it seems, has replaced a very aged bird, 'Barbara', well known to the  Bingil Bay/Garners Beach  community.
'Barbara' is one of Mrs Freda Jorrisen's birds. That means she is almost 50 years old.

'Barbara' has been the mate of 'Joov' for the last three years and Joov, this year, as an 8 year old, has for the first time successfully raised a chick. (Larry)
