Quad bikes through Little tern nesting area

13/12/2011

The ongoing unresolved situation with shorebird nesting areas at Cowley Beach and Coquette Point can be compared with the solutions found to identical problems by the Mogareeka community in NSW. Check out the inspiring video Russell has found below.

Here is Russell's latest update on nesting sites at Cowley Beach

Checked on nest today and a known local was driving quad through dune track and up through foredune vegetation. The eggs were still there at the nest but no sign of mum at all.

People still driving quad bikes through the nesting zone and sign seems to be worthless.

Council aren’t doing anything to stop this happening on this dune but when have they?

Good news is today I found out that CCRC have signs that they might put out when the dune track is sorted…too little too late.

Establishing yet another dune track means that these people get all tide access to this nesting area. Seems endangered species are less important than a perceived historical right to drive anywhere one wants on this beach/dune system.

Here are some snaps of quad bike tracks through the closed dune track today. Is this what is meant by managed vehicle use?

Here is bloody interesting NSW film clip.  These people are miles ahead of us backwards Queenslanders! Interesting to see they had similar problems with locals!

Great work Russell spotting these endangered Little Terns...you have hopefully turned the corner at Cowley Beach. As for the quad bikes words fail me...they need to be banned from the area...especially the infamous rider Jan! Thanks for showing the damage done on the beach there.
Seeing the NSW film clip makes me see we are a long behind and need to get with the programme like they did.
Every creature big or small deserves to be saved from extinction.
