Driving on beaches

The devastation to a natural beach environment by vehicles is heartbreakingly demonstrated at Cowley Beach.

Conservationist and campaigner Russell Constable gives an update on the situation at Cowley Beach in this video which includes Channel 7's news story on Wednesday. Russell added photos at the end of the video to show what happens to a beach when it is used as a local road.

Vehicle tracks interupt turtle hatchlings ability to reach the sea.

Up until now there have been very few vehicles driving on beaches at Mission Beach but with the foreshore devastation from cyclone Yasi, uncontrolled access to the beach both by foot flow and vehicles is inhibiting the regeneration process of a critically endangered ecosystem. If you read this document you will see that Mission Beach is well represented as is all the coastline in the wet tropics.
