The Great Barrier Reef: an obituary

30/3/2014

Compulsory viewing.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is gathering in Japan to explore the effect of climate change on the natural world. For the Great Barrier Reef, the situation is stark - emissions must be cut radically, and quickly, if it is to survive

Crested Terns are birds to watch

ON THE BEACH: A family of crested terns takes a break from fishing in this picture by Yvonne Cunningham.
WILDWATCH:  by  ANNE WILKINSON.

Wandering the Cassowary Coast beaches, bird watching is always a pleasure. It is a family rule always to carry a light pair of binoculars and, for me, a sketchbook.

There are so many different kinds of birds for which the beach and the sea are focuses.

WILDWATCH: by ANNE WILKINSON.

The exquisite beaches of the Cassowary Coast are often in the news, both for good and, sadly, sometimes for bad reasons.

Whatever the cause, the fact remains this region can boast some of the most beautiful beaches, even after Cyclone Yasi, in Australia.

News from Coquette point

Hello from Coquette Point,

A very wet, windy and cold week has at last broken into sunshine but only very late this afternoon.

This morning I accepted an invitation from Mandubarra elder Nellie Epong to be present at a turtle release at Cowley Beach. Although overcast the day was warm with a gentle wind blowing: a perfect day for a turtle release.

Dear Mr Brennan

I have noticed flagging tape through the Cowley dune last weekend south of the boat ramp, presumably marking the proposed new road route? I understand all permits have not yet been obtained to undertake the works and would like to ask why the work to date was ever performed, given that there is presumably a possibility that permits might not be granted to allow the work to continue?

Here is an update on correspondence to the CCRC regarding the battle to protect Cowley Beach from  vehicles driving on the sensitive beach environment most recently threatening the survival of  the young turtle hatchlings.

On the 10th May 2012  Richard Piper emailed the CCRC
as follows;  Dear Kim and others copied in,
I would like to discuss what is still going on with vehicles at Cowley beach with you.

The ongoing destruction of Cowley Beach caused by the inaction of authorities is a sad reminder of the lack of  leadership in the CCRC regarding environmental issues.  The following is correspondence by Russell Constable and Richard Piper who have been working with the Mandubarra mob fighting for a better deal for Cowley Beach.

On April 19th Russell wrote  to the CCRC;

The ongoing unresolved situation with shorebird nesting areas at Cowley Beach and Coquette Point can be compared with the solutions found to identical problems by the Mogareeka community in NSW. Check out the inspiring video Russell has found below.

Concerns about Little terns

12/12/2011

Picture
It's hard to keep up with all the fires that are burning in regard to the threats to our natural environment.  We live in a area recognised internationally as special and yet even with knowledge of the adverse impacts by day to day activities of the general public,  there is  a slow response and very little will by the governments to enact existing, or introduce relevant laws to help protect the remaining natural areas and the wildlife that rely on them.  Thanks to people like Russell Constable and Yvonne Cunningham who dedicate a huge amount of their spare time observing their local environments and taking action to raise awareness in the hope of making postive changes. This often  results  in a negative or agressive reponse from those who feel it is their right to continue with practices even when they are made aware of damage they may be causing.
