Jetty Upgrade

There has been a lot of talk about boating needs at Mission Beach with the jetty and pontoon out of action since cylcone Yasi.  Each time a cyclone has hit Mission Beach in the last 25 years, the push for a marina has stopped proper repair of the jetty.  We need to step back a moment    Progress at Missison Beach needs to be  fully  respective and understanding of the high biodiversity values of the area. That is   the only sustainable economy of Mission Beach.

A modern Jetty upgrade may be the long term solution for Mission Beach boating needs. A sustainable economic future is reliant on natural growth reflecting realistic needs of the community with equal consideration given to the rural and natural village character and the outstanding natural environment.  This will build a stonger community, retain the lifestyle and exceptional natural beauty that the majority of residents settled at Mission Beach for.   Here are some facts to consider... click on image

Wow! How can they argue against that. They can't.

Advertising the proposal as "safe" is misleading as cyclonic storm surge in this area would be destructive to all craft within such a harbour. Best bet would be to up anchor and get the hell up to Mourilyan Harbour quick smart if you still want to have a boat that floats at the end of the day. It amazes me that people would suggest something so foolish so soon after the "Safe" harbour at Hinchinbrook got turned into a boat wrecking yard post Yasi. Seems greed overrides common sense now that the cyclone has passed

Hi Russell.

After talking to a number of boat owners from Hinchinbrook it would appear to me that the main problem was that the piers/piles of the marina weren't built high enough to cope with the increase height of the water from the surge and the marina and boat moorings simple floated up and over the piers/pilings and blew all up over each other. There were a small number of boats that managed to stayed moored.

Your view is very narrow minded and I would be guessing that no-where is really safe in a Cat 5 cyclone ... I've been thru 2 in the last 5 years or so. However, a safe boat harbour would be definitely welcome on days like today, 1st July 2011, where there is a little bit of a stiff breeze and enough swell to make loading/unloading from a jetty or even a t shaped jetty unsafe.

I am unaware of where you would even fantasize up the idea that anyone has proposed a 'safe' harbour during a cyclone and I would suggest you are stating this to further your own misguided agenda.

IF you live in a house then you are wreaking havoc on the little creatures that lived in the ground under the house you built/someone else built.

If you drive a car then you are wreaking havoc on all the little creatures that your car smashes into as you drive along the roads ... then again, I guess you are also creating a food source for the animals that feed off the road kill including the many plovers nesting alongside the roadways up here - have you seen the number of baby plovers recently alongside the roadways? So cute ...

As for the greed overriding commonsense ... I have no financial input or interest in any boat harbour or jetty proposal in Mission Beach BUT I do have 8 kids, 4 left at home and attending schools here and we would LOVE somewhere safe to anchor up a boat in the majority of weather here. Cheers. Paul Toogood.
