Mission Beach Cassowaries
A male cassowary stands over his dead chick after it was hit and left
as the family attempted to cross a commuter road at Mission Beach

An on-site meeting was held this week to progress solutions to cassowary road deaths at Carmoo on Tully-Mission Beach Rd, the area with the most cassowary deaths in the Wet Tropics. It was organised by Terrain and attended by Transport & Main Roads, C4, Mission Beach Cassowaries, Mission Beach Community Association, Environment & Heritage Protection, JCU, Council and  Zoo & Aquarium Assoc.
We understand that Main Roads are now looking at a package for Carmoo corner including speed limits, signage and coloured road verges, and that Main Roads will present a draft to us by February/March. We all want a solution that works for cassowaries, drivers and Carmoo residents.
If you would like to help, please email the Main Roads Minister (Mark Bailey) and also the Transport and Main Roads Director-General (Neil Scales) asking that Main Roads continue to work with scientists and the community to amend the road speed environment at Carmoo to stop cassowary deaths
.

Dear Minister Bailey and Mr Scales,

Thank you for the work  you are doing to progress solutions to  cassowary road deaths at Carmoo and other high road death hotspots at Mission Beach.

Sadly, yet another cassowary was killed on Mission Beach Roads  this morning, 11 Dec 2015

( add your comment here).

Please ensure your department  continues  to work with scientists and the community to amend the road speed environment at Carmoo  to stop this heartbreaking record of cassowary deaths.

Yours sincerely
