Community Cassowary Identification and Tracking Project (Mission Beach)
|
The Community Cassowary Identification and Tracking project is about information sharing that can involve the whole community.
Cassowaries, like us, are very individual so it is quite easy to distinguish one from another. The older they are the easier it is but we can identify birds from as young as a brown chick if we have a clear photo of the distinguishing features. New technology with smart phones and digital cameras is offering a better opportunity to gather quality information. This information can help understand what birds are moving in what area, crossing what roads and how often. It can also help to understand what chicks go on to survive and where they disperse to. It can help the relevant authorities put in place the planning that is necessary to protect not only the endangered Cassowary but all the species and ecosytems reliant and co-dependant on them as a keystone species. The information gathered from the sample area over the past two years has established there are 14 identifiable individual birds in the Bingil Bay/Garners Beach area.
